crochet for charity
considerations for donated crochet
Rule of thumb: Make gifts that you would be proud to give to a family member or friend. Don’t just make a blanket, scarf, or hat; make someone’s new favorite blanket, scarf, or hat.
Always consider the recipient. Remember that your gift will go to…
- Someone who wants to be comfortable and warm. If it’s itchy, abrasive, or otherwise unpleasant to touch, don’t donate it. Consider that some folks don’t like having fringe at the top of a blanket where their face is. Consider that some fibers (like cotton) absorb and hold onto moisture well—not ideal for cold weather—or that some folks are allergic/sensitive to wool, cigarette smoke, or pet hair.
- Someone who wants their belongings to last. As much as you can, ensure that items are machine wash friendly. More specifically, items should be able to be washed and dried in any temperature and be able to withstand the rigor of a washing machine. Ensure your knots and seams are strong and that your ends are properly woven in. Spare someone the heartbreak of having their item unravel.
- Someone who wants their belongings to fit. People come in all shapes and sizes. What is “average” sized won’t fit everyone. Bodies large and small deserve items suited for them.
- Someone who has a favorite color, favorite style, or favorite theme. Oftentimes, recipients get to choose items from a collection. Our belongings reflect part of who we are, so make things to suit all kinds of preferences. Feminine/masculine, bright/dark, playful/sophisticated, detailed/plain.
organizations that accept donated crochet
Remember: Before making any items for donation, always read an organization’s guidelines for donations. Some organizations require that items use specific fibers, colors, or patterns. Some organizations may also require that items be pre-washed and pet hair/smoke-free. Also, some organizations have deadlines for donations (e.g., not accepting winter items during the summer).
